What are the official procedures to be carried out after marriage?

Renewal of Identity Card

One of the most important official procedures you need to do after marriage is to renew your identity card. Especially since the surnames of new brides will also change, their identity cards need to be renewed.

Although there is no criminal sanction if you do not renew your identity card, we can say that you must change your identity card within 30 days from the date of your marriage as a legal obligation.

In order for your identity card to be changed, your information must be forwarded from the municipality where your marriage took place to the district civil registry office to which you are affiliated. (Which may take a week or ten days.)

The documents required for identity card renewal are as follows:

  • Marriage certificate,
  • Birth certificate,
  • 2 biometric photographs.

The identity card renewal fee has been determined as 25 TL for 2020. To change your identity after marriage, you can make an appointment by calling Alo 199 or you can make an appointment online from the official website of the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship.

Driving License Renewal

Your driver's license, which is one of the official documents that replace your identity, also needs to be renewed after marriage. Driving licenses, which were previously issued by police departments, are now issued by district civil registry offices.

Before changing your driving license, you need to prepare the following documents:

  • Birth certificate,
  • Your current driver's license,
  • 1 biometric photograph (must have been taken in the last six months),
  • Driver health report,
  • Document or statement stating blood type,
  • Driver's license, valuable paper, receipt proving that the fee and foundation share have been paid.

The driver's license renewal fee is 15 TL for 2020. The amount to be paid for those who want to renew their new type driver's license is 196 TL. (Driving licenses issued after January 1, 2016 are new types.)

Changing the Passport

One of the documents you need to renew when you get married is your passport. There is no specific period within which you need to renew your passport, but if you are planning a trip abroad soon, you can have your passport renewed when you go to renew your ID and driver's license. Because passport procedures are now carried out by civil registration and citizenship directors.

The documents required for passport renewal are as follows:

  • Your renewed ID card,
  • 2 biometric photographs,
  • Your old passport, if you have one
  • Receipt showing that you have paid the passport change fee.

Let us note that the passport change fee for 2020 is 163 TL.

Updating Residence Address

Another piece of information you need to update after getting married so that your new home is officially recognized is your location information. You can update your residence address by going to your district population directorate where you will be settled. Among the documents you need to take with you for this are; Your rental agreement or an invoice in your name, your identity card and marriage certificate are included.

Changing Family Physician

It is very important that you visit your family doctor in your new place of living. You can meet your new family doctor and register by going to your nearest family health center. We wanted to point out that you will have to see your family doctor, especially if you get a medical report for work or if you are pregnant.

Updating Bank Information

While you are changing all your official documents due to the change of your surname, you can also update your bank information.
